DEERFIELD — With Town Clerk/Treasurer/Collector Barbara Hancock resigning to take a position elsewhere, the town now has to figure out what to do with the combined position, which is one of only two in the state.

The Select Board voted to “regretfully accept” Hancock’s resignation and named Sarah Kimball as the interim treasurer/collector and Jennifer Wallace as the interim town clerk.

“Barbara has done an excellent job for the town of Deerfield over the last couple of years,” said Select Board Chairman David Wolfram. “It’s a shame to lose her.”

Hancock submitted her resignation to the board Dec. 22 and worked through Jan. 7.

“I have been very fortunate to have worked with and for an amazing supportive Select Board,” Hancock wrote. “I am immensely appreciative of the respect and latitude you all have shown me.”

In a phone call, Hancock decline to comment on where she will be working next.

Town Administrator Kayce Warren suggested the town move to split the town clerk/treasurer/collector position into two because of the overwhelming responsibilities it currently requires, but that split “can’t happen right away.” She added the “very unique” role will make it difficult to hire a replacement.

“It’s untenable. It’s too much work,” Warren said. “There’s two positions in the state and this is one of them.”
