Jimmy Burgoff: Speed kills

It has become even more evident recently how careless so many local drivers act. As a driver of a big truck it always amazes me that I get cut off at speed, have to deal with cars that put on their turn signal as they’re starting to turn, and wait at a stop light too close behind me on a hill. My gut feeling is that it’s pure selfishness. It’s like we’re all in someone’s private pin-ball game and the object is to navigate around everyone without respecting others’ space in traffic.

If a horse galloped up your side street at top speed of 35 miles per hour, everyone would stop what they’re doing and yell for the rider to slow down. Yet on the same street, a car driver going 50 miles an hour doesn’t think twice about the possible hazards they may create with excessive speed. In a parking lot, excessive speed may be the difference between 3 mph and ½ mph. Speed kills!
