Sandy and Fred Wang: Tell your friends and neighbors about the census

It is our civic duty and mandatory to complete the census.

Beyond being required by law, there are many compelling reasons to fill out this document. Distribution of more than $675 billion in federal funds that is spent on schools, hospitals, roads and other crucial programs is based on census data. Results of the census determine how many seats in the House of Representatives each state gets. Additionally, congressional and state legislative districts are redrawn based on this data.

Locally, governments, businesses, and residents use this information for a variety of reasons, including consumer advocacy, public safety and job creation. In short, funding, fair representation, redistricting and other crucial decisions depend on accurate census data.

How do I go about completing the census? Glad you asked. By now every household in Amherst should have received a letter invitation to respond online to the 2020 census. The letter included a unique census identification number for each household. Using that number, you can go online at my2020census.gov to complete the census in one of 13 languages.

Fortunately, you have three options to complete it: (1) online (where questions and instructions are available in 13 languages); (2) on paper; or, (3) for households that do not respond online or on paper, in person with a U.S. Census Bureau interviewer.

Census data is collected by household, which means that every address has one opportunity to complete it. Assistance completing the census questionnaire is available to residents at the Amherst Senior Center (413-259-3060), Thuan Le at Stavros (413-256-0473, ext. 264) or the Center for New Americans (413-587-0084).

Please take the time to complete the 2020 census. It’s a way to participate in our democracy and say “I count!”
