The Lehrer Report for June 30, 2017

Happy birthday to the United States. Celebrate the Fourth of July safely. Area communities do fireworks on different days. Check the listings if you like to see the spectacular displays.

Amherst has two events on the Fourth. The South Amherst parade around Fiddler’s Green is at 10 a.m. It features decorated bikes, costumed characters and animals. The South Amherst Thursday Club, of which I am a member, follows the band.

The LSSE sponsors games, activities, a band concert and fireworks at the UMass playing field behind the football stadium beginning at 6 p.m.

Save the date. Bonnie Isman of Amherst said the Friends of the Jones Library are again holding Literary Feasts where you eat and talk about books. The next is July 27 at Osteria Vespa. The featured author is Donna Leon and her Guido Brunetti books. I have read all her books and I will be there.

The restaurant will donate 15 percent of sales to the library.

Another literary feast will be held in August.

The Jones Library is holding a free summer Saturday movie matinee series July 1, 8, 15 and 29 at 2:30 p.m. The theme for the series is Building a Better World, that dovetails with the Summer Reading Club theme.

I have an antenna on my roof and the wire to connect it to my TV. However, I don’t have a black box that converts analog to digital signals. Does anyone have a black box I could borrow to see if there is anything worth watching before I invest in a box? Thanks.

Town Manager Paul Bockelman helped get the Starbucks sign repaired. I hope he could influence People’s Bank to repair their clock.

Garden report: I have blossoms on the pepper plants. The foxglove and daisies have bloomed. I found garlic scapes in a flower bed.
