SUNDERLAND — The Select Board has approved a plan for a limited reopening of the Sunderland Public Library, contingent upon Board of Health approval.

“We’re hoping that we can open the library by appointment for two days a week,” Library Director Katherine Hand said at a recent Select Board meeting.

Thirty-minute browsing appointments will be available on Tuesdays from 1 to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., Hand said.

“We would allow 30 minutes in between appointments for staff to reset, clean the building and make sure we’re ready for the next group to come in,” she said, noting she would ask patrons who come for appointments to do a “self-screen” before coming in, and to wear a mask at all times.

Select Board member Scott Bergeron asked Hand what the current demand is.

“There’s certain patrons who really want to come in and browse materials — as well as families, they want their kids to be able to come in and pick up their books,” she said.

Still, she said, there are a lot of patrons who are “happy with the curbside services” the library is offering.

Curbside pickup will remain an option, Hand said. Patrons can request books over the phone or online .
