All bets are off for the first snowfall. My friends and I were too late, having suggested the first snowfall would be later in the month. I was way off thinking Dec. 29.

The snow was still pretty and light. You could sweep the snow with a broom.

Reminder: put the lock de-icer in your purse or pocket. It won’t do any good if it’s locked in the car and you can’t open the door.

The December calendar has a full schedule of concerts. While the campus vespers and many local choruses are done, there is still more to come.

The Amherst Area Gospel Choir performs Dec. 16 at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church on Main Street. It’s free but donations are welcome. They will be used for gift certificates to preschools, according to Jacquie Wallace, who directs the choir.

In addition, the Amherst Community Band will perform a holiday concert Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. at the Pacific Lodge, 99 Main St. It’s free and sponsored by the Amherst Business Improvement District.

The BID is sponsoring Flash Mob Caroling on Dec. 16 at noon at the Merry Maple.

Check the calendar for all the musical listings.

Winter officially begins Dec. 21. You can welcome the solstice at the University of Massachusetts Sun Wheel at 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Hope for sunshine at UMass; otherwise, you miss the effect of the stone alignment. Arcadia in Easthampton also has a solstice program.
