It is with great regret that I announce the death of my very dear friend, Joan Ross Logan, who died July 18 after a brief illness.

Joan was very smart, funny and very involved in the community. She retired after decades as a librarian at the Wildwood Elementary School. She was elected to the Housing Authority and served for 30 years. She was a member of Town Meeting, and was active in the League of Women Voters and the Democratic Town Committee. She read books to children at the Jones Library. She was a founding mother of the Jewish Community of Amherst.

She didn’t have a television. She listened to public radio every day, the news and information programs. She was an avid reader, daily newspapers, the New Yorker, Time magazine. She was a member of the League Book Group. Joseph Conrad was a favorite author.

She was an avid supporter of the high school performing groups. We attended every theater production, the Cabaret and Lasagne Dinner. She called the high school musicals “magical.” We also went to every Amherst Community Theater production as well as every Valley Light Opera performance.

She loved gospel music and was a Horace Boyer groupie. Every summer we went to his concerts at the Porter Phelps Museum.

Judy Brooks was her close friend, but I never told her she died. I couldn’t do it.

Joan was Jewish and knew discrimination when she lived in the South and Fresno, California. She shared stories with me.

She had a stroke several years ago, which affected her speech. That was very frustrating since she was so articulate. Her body was donated to the University of Massachusetts Medical School. As a result, there was no funeral.

I will have an open house in her honor at my house in September, her birthday month.

All are invited. I will announce the date closer to the time.

Condolences to the family: her son, daughter-in-law and grandson and her friends.

I really miss her.
