Happy New Year to all. Welcome 2019. Reminder: Put up the new calendar.

Congratulations to Diana Stein of Amherst who sent the first entry to the summer postcard contest. However, it was better than a card. She emailed several photos of her trip to Thailand, which she said was magical.

She visited the Dei Suthep Temple and took the tram up to top of the golden pagoda. It is very golden in the sunlight from the photo. She also had a massage, much needed after the 24-hour flight.

Look forward to hearing more about the trip.

Gigi Barnhill of Amherst sent an email about the Conch Shell Award that the Historical Society presents annually to celebrate Founder’s Day in February.

The award is presented to a person who made valuable contributions to the preservation and appreciation of Amherst history. If you know someone who fits that description, send

nominations by Jan. 9 to: info@amhersthistory.org.

The first day of winter was rainy and warm. Another missed astronomical opportunity — seeing the Solstice sunrise and sunset at the UMass Sunwheel.

The no-water-needs amaryllis keeps growing. One shoot is several inches high.
