HADLEY — Applications are open for a town poet laureate, the Hadley Cultural Council announced Tuesday. The committee is searching for a resident with a passion for poetry and literature on top of strong ties to the town, said D. Dina Friedman, the council’s co-chairwoman.

“We’re looking for someone enthusiastic about bringing the community together and working with people,” Friedman said.

The council said the poet laureate will advance awareness and appreciation of poetry and literature through readings at public events such as town meetings. The poet laureate will also be charged with developing creative workshops for the public. The position is part time, and while compensation might be obtained from the Hadley Cultural Council account, Friedman said they weren’t sure how much the council could pay.

Friedman said the council is looking for sponsorships from local businesses to help pay for community workshops.

Contact the Hadley Cultural Council to nominate a candidate at hadleyculturalcouncil@aol.com. Applications are due by Nov. 1 and the council said a decision will be reached by the end of the year. The position begins in January.

Hadley is following Northampton, which recently named its ninth poet laureate, Karen Skolfield, and Easthampton, whose second poet laureate is María José Giménez.
